Easy Sweater Tutorial
Never made a sweater before? You can make an easy sweater with this this tutorial. Here’s how: –
You need: –
- make a pattern or download a Burda pattern
- knit fabric
- contrast colour knit fabric
- ribbing for the neck and cuffs
- sewing scissors
- pins
- sewing machine
You do: –
Make a pattern which involves tracing the outline of an existing sweater – allowing a bit extra for seams. Curve the underarm generously almost giving a dolman like sleeve. See my pattern below. Or go to burdastyle.com and download one of their sweater patterns. You can see another version of this top – here
Make sure you have a nice long piece of rib knit. Mine came in a tube so I had to sew a few pieces together. And I wanted a contrast piece at the bottom. That was cut to the same width as my top.
I used a saucer and an old piece of soap to trace a line so I got a nice even curve at the neckline. The front must be slightly lower than the back.
I sewed the contrast piece to the front and back pieces. And then sewed the sides and shoulders. Next I hemmed the bottom of the sweater.
And then I went and did something stupid. I burnt my one contrast piece while pressing the seams open with an iron. I didn’t have enough fabric left to make a new piece so I had to make an insert. It looks OK but I know it’s there.
Next I folded my rib knit in half. Pinned it to the neck and stretched it as I pinned it Then I put the sweater on, trying to avoid being stabbed by pins, and checked the neck wasn’t too loose or too tight. I cut it and sewed the two ends of rib knit together. And sewed it in place to the neckline. I did the same with the cuffs.
You can have a wider or narrower ribbed neckline by adjusting the width of your ribbing. You can have a smaller neck rib and a wider cuff rib. Up to you.
That’s your easy sweater done from this tutorial. Perfect for a relaxed athleisure outfit.
Have a great week.
