Black Culottes Tutorial
If you cannot find a pair of culottes you love, then this black culottes tutorial is perfect for you as you can make your own. It’s super easy. The only slightly technical thing to do – is fit a zip. And I have a tutorial for that on this link – Zipper Tutorial.
I’ve made these exact same pants before in a different fabric and slight longer. You can find the full tutorial here – FREE Culottes Tutorial. This is a quickie tutorial.
There is no free sewing pattern this time. You need to invest a basic pants pattern. I must be honest, I’m happy to make dresses, tops and skirts from DIY patterns-v but when it comes to pants – just buy a pattern and be done with it.
You need a proper fit and bought patterns come graded to fit nicely around your tummy, crotch and bum area. It’s way too technical adjusting a pattern to get a perfect fit. I do not want an ill fitting garment adding distortions to my hips and bum.
You can also use your pants pattern over and over again. I prefer a pattern without a waist band as I have a short waist. But if you prefer a waistband, then buy a pattern with one. I made these culottes from quite a heavy linen which means they are quite structured which I like. However, I suspect after a while the linen will soften which may change the fit.
You need: –
- fabric
- matching colour thread
- matching colour zip
- sewing machine
- pins
- sewing scissors
- sewing pattern
You do: –
Cut your pattern pieces and pin them together right sides facing inwards. Pin and sew any darts.
Sew the side legs and and inside legs of your culottes.
Sew your zipper in place
I didn’t have enough fabric for my waist facing so I used another piece of fabric of a similar weight. Pin and sew facing to waist.
Finally hem the bottoms and that’s your culottes done.
Have a great green week.
