DIY Eye Mask
This DIY eye mask is a modern minimal take on some of the clean over the top eye masks out there. I wanted something I could put on in one go. Not still have to tie it on at the back of my head. It had to keep out light so it would work for meditating. And of course I would use up left-over fabric scraps. Here’s how I made it.
You need: –
- fabric
- matching colour thread
- hand sewing needle
- elastic
- paper
- pencil
- paper scissors
- pins
- sewing scissors
- sewing machine
- an eye mask
You do: –
Trace around an eye mask to make a pattern using your pencil and paper. Remember to draw a second line outside the eye mask creating a 1 centimetre seam allowance. You can also add a layer of block-out fabric to make sure it well and truly blocks out light. I wished I had made my eye mask a bit bigger so it covered more of my eyes which would have made it more effective. But that said, you don’t want it covering your nose or you might struggle to breathe.
Measure out an approximate amount of elastic to fit around your head plus a teeny bit more. Pin right sides together and pin elastic to your eye mask where your seam will go. See picture. Test it to make it’s not too loose or too tight.
Sew around the eye mask leaving a space open so you can turn it inside out. Trim away surplus fabric. Turn inside out.
Hand sew the open section closed using tiny invisible stitches.
Viola! Your own custom-made eye mask.
Have a great green week.
