Blockout Curtains
Why would anyone want blockout curtains? Simple. They block out light helping you sleep better. And they add an extra layer of insulation so noise and temperatures are muted. What if you already have the perfect curtains? Make your own DIY Blockout Curtains or Blackout Curtains by adding blockout fabric to the back of them. I added blockout material to the back of my daughter’s aqua chintz curtains. Here’s how.
You need: –
- curtains
- matching colour thread
- blockout material (also called blackout)
- pins
- sewing scissors
- sewing machine
You do: –
Lie your curtains on a clean suface wrong side up. I moved the chairs away in our living room and used the floor. Measure from below the curtain tape to the bottom of the curtain. And from side to side. You need to take off 1 – 2 centimetres all around to get the measurement for your blockout material.
The blockout must not be visible which is why you want it slightly smaller than the curtain.
Cut your blockout. Then pin it to the back of your curtain.
You’re going to sew the blockout material to the top of the curtain just below the curtain tab using matching colour thread. You will also hand sew the blockout to the sides of the curtain in one or two spots to hold it in place.
Voila! Perfect blockout curtains.
Have a great week.
