DIY Handbag Organiser
Last week I made a handbag insert or a handbag organiser from two place mats. You can see that on this link – DIY Handbag Organiser. I was following a tutorial found on Pinterest. It didn’t go as I expected but it worked out OK in the end.
I decided to try my own hand at this and made a pattern for a DIY handbag organiser. Ideally this should have been made in a darker colour but I always use up whatever materials I have, which in this case was white Bull Denim.
You need: –
- firm fabric
- matching colour thread
- tape measure
- sewing scissors
- pins
- sewing machine
You do: –
You need to cut the pieces. See pattern below which makes 2 x handbag organisers
Sew the narrow pieces into straps. See below.
Fold over and hem the tops of all four of the other pieces. The longest edge. Then pin the 2 smaller pieces to the 2 larger pieces – lining the bottom ends together. The sides will not come together as you are going to gather the smaller piece up a bit. See picture below to understand.
I made 4 pockets on each side. You can make as many as you want. One big pocket and two smaller. Lots of smaller pockets. Whatever works for you. What you need to do is pin your pockets in place.
Now fold the side edges of your pockets under. Pin in place. Sew pockets and sides.
Next place your two pieces together with the pockets facing inward toward each other. Pin together.
Snip a 3 centimetre square at each end at the bottom of your handbag organiser. The bigger this square the wider – and shorter – your handbag organiser will be. Sew the bottom and sides together. It might be a bit bumpy where the pockets are. That’s OK.
Fold the square flat as in the picture above and sew the corner.
Lastly pin and sew your handles in place. If you want them shorter or wider apart, then do just that.
And voila! a very handy handbag organiser. What I love most is, I lift the handbag organiser out of my current bag and drop it straight into another bag. Just like that. No more having to move every single item that I carry with me.
See you right here next week.
