Bamboo Handle Handbag
I mentioned in last week’s post that I’ve been using up old curtains in a bunch of projects. This week I used more of those curtains to make this easy bamboo handle handbag. Finding the bamboo handles was the hardest part. I nearly made a square out of wood as I thought I was never going to find any. Here’s how I made it –
You need: –
- fabric
- matching colour thread
- sewing machine
- pins
- sewing scissors
- bamboo handle
You do: –
Make your pattern to fit your handles. I’ve included my pattern but your handles may be a completely different size. Use this pattern only as a guide.
Now cut out you bag from your fabric.
Hem or over-lock or zig-zag as I did at the top of your two bag pieces and pin the them together.
Sew up sides leaving a piece of about 10 centimetres to 15 centimetres open from the top.
This is the part that will fit around the handles. Now neaten off the area you left open by sewing it flat and making a hem. See below.
Snip into the rounded edges of your bag so they splay open. Turn bag inside out. Fold tops over and press or iron so they are neat and even. Now fold the tops over your bamboo handles and pin in place.
Finally sew bag to handles and just like that your bag is complete. Easy peasy.
Next week I test-drive a Pinterest idea to create outdoor seating from concrete bricks.
Have a great green week.
Greenie.
Hello I am sesching for bamboo handles to make a similar bag can you advise where to purchase them . Many thanks
Hi Sue
Have to honest, I struggled to find handles.
Best places to look are vintage shops, charity shops and junk or car boot sales. Buy old tired bags and re-use the handles. Good haberdashery shops should have handles for you. You may get lucky with an on-line shop.
I very nearly made my own hoops using firm rope or hose. Was going to make a loop and join the ends together with duct tape which will be invisible inside the seam.
About to post a bag with loop handles now. Look out for it.
If you know someone who is handy you could get them to cut handles from wood or perspex for you. A square shape could also work.
Good luck.
Greenie.
I got a few handles in wood and perspex from Aberkhem a very good all round shop for crafts.
