Rubber jewelry

And now for something completely different. Phew! After a hectic half day reading up on all sorts of unusual ways to make clothes and accessories out of discarded items, I thought I would make a contribution. The eco fashion website – Ecouterre had jewellery made out of human teeth, necklaces from old tyres and even skirts that grow plants. You have got to love the innovative ideas some of these people are coming up with. Visit Ecouterre here – Ecouterre
The black O-rings are standard hardware shop stock. They come in assorted sizes and can be worn as rings or bracelets. The skater kids wear armfuls of them. They come in different colours in the surfer shops. I think they call them jelly bangles.
I juxtapose one or two plain black O-rings with more classic rings for a restrained take on this look. I’m not emo enough to go all out. Even if I have loved The Cure since high school.
The natural coloured bangle is … wait for it … the remnants of a female condom. I saw this homeless lady with piles of these worn right up her arms. She told me they were discoloured from having been worn and kindly gave me one. I was so touched that someone who had so little would give to me?
The green bangle is pinched from the ideas I found on the website Instructables. It’s a bangle made from rubber bands. Here is a link – rubber band bracelet.
The Greenie Galleries at the top of this page have 100s of photos of older and newer projects showing multiple ways to make your own clothing and accessories. There are also ideas to recycle or upcycle.
See you soon.
