How to make fashion medals

Easy “medals”

In this post I show how to make military style medals to wear on your jackets. It’s a small touch. But rather than splash out on a couple of new jackets, you can lend a military look to existing jackets by styling them with military-esque accessories.

It should be easy to follow. Starting on the right you can see I took a strip of heavy weight strapping and cut a V into each end. That is to stop it fraying. You could also cut the end diagonally. No idea why cutting diagonally across stops fraying, but it does. And the V shape also looks better.

Next up you need a safety pin the same width as the strapping or tape. Make sure the safety pin opens outward before you start sewing or you may find you can’t wear your new medal. Then pin the tape over the medal and sew the strap flat so that the safety pin stays in place.

Then add a “medal”. These are arbitrary items I found in our bead shop. Real medals are pricey and I’m not sure if you can wear someone else’s award? Lastly, pin your new accessory to the lapel of a jacket and team it with a military style belt. Voila!

The Greenie Galleries at the top of this page have 100s of photos of older and newer projects showing multiple ways to make your own clothing and accessories. There are also ideas to recycle or upcycle.

See you soon.
